Nepean Conservation Group Annual General Meeting on Saturday 16 February, at 3:00 for 3:30 pm start @ Badcoe Hall, Point Nepean National Park.
We would like to welcome you and your family and friends. As in the past we will have our AGM, a guest speaker and a BYO everything dinner on the parade ground overlooking Port Phillip.
Our Guest Speaker, Adam Magennis, will be speaking on the “Aboriginal Archaeological Record of the Mornington Peninsula.”
He is a local aboriginal artist and a trained archaeologist. In his studies, he delved into historical archaeology, Pleistocene archaeology (which ended 10,000 years ago), Victorian Aboriginal archaeology and archaeological theory. Mr Magennis was the first aboriginal cultural heritage adviser to the MPS. He believes that intuition plays a major role in archaeology. Mr Magennis brings a unique perspective to his profession, stating that if you understand country and how the natural systems function, you can do a better job. Archaeology takes into account social, symbolic, ecological and geological values. There are 800 registered Aboriginal sites on the peninsula, many are near water, but many have been destroyed since Europeans arrived on the peninsula in the 1830s.
Adam’s talk will enable the NCG to consider where our activities coincide in support of present day indigenous cultural objectives and in what areas we can work together in the future.
